Using oils to cleanse is nothing new. It’s been around for centuries. It is great for every skin type and can make the difference between clear skin and skin congested with sebum, makeup and pollutants clogging the pores forming blackheads, whiteheads and forming the perfect environment for breakouts.
Benefits for Oily and Acneic Skin
A lot of people, especially those with oilier and acneic skin, thinks oils is the bane of their existence. But believe it or not, incorporating a cleansing oil into your skin care routine can help to stop breakouts, blackheads and whiteheads making for smoother more refined skin. The science or chemistry behind this is simply like attracts like and in this case, oil attracts oil. Cleansing with an oil on oilier skin removes excess oils, providing deeper cleansing, hence less buildup. Using cleansing oils also keeps the skin normalized. What I mean is keeping the skin as close to its natural state as possible and what others refer to as the ph balance of the skin. When harsh chemicals and acids are used to cleanse the skin, the skin goes from oily to dry, making the skin thinks it needs to produce even more oils. Overtime, your skin becomes even more oily causing more breakouts and congestion. Look for one that contains jojoba oil or borage seed oil.
Benefits for Dry Skin
Cleansing with an oil cleanser is even good for those with drier skin types as well. A perfect way to remove makeup, cleansing oils nourishes and moisturizes as it cleans. For this skin type, I recommend using this oil as the first step in cleansing at nights followed by a cream cleanser and as a solo cleansing in the morning, removing with a damp or even dry clean face cloth for extra nourishment. Incorporating a cleansing oil with argan oil is a sure bet for more moisturized skin.
Benefits for Mature/Aging Skin
As we age, our skin’s natural ability to get rid of dead skin cells gets slows down. This overtime causes the skin to compact layers upon layers of dead skin cells. Using a cleansing oil, especially one containing evening primrose oil, provides a deeper cleanse that removes excess dead skin cells and plumps and moisturize the skin, helping to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. A win-win to anyone looking to reverse signs of aging.
If these are budget busters, head to your local health food store and pick a few of the oils I've mentioned and bring out the inner mixologist in you and create a blend that is suited to your skincare needs.
